You have to authenticate any user accessing the Win2K system - if no specific userid and password is given, the Win98 box will attempt to log in using the current user's Windows Login userid and password. That userid must actually exist on the Win2K system (since you don't have a server to provide authentication for it instead) and it must be granted the necessary priveleges to use resources attached to the Win2K system.

IPC$ is the generic interprocess communications resource for Win2K; it's likely that (1) you don't have accounts set up properly on the Win2K system, and (2) that you haven't properly shared anything on the Win2K system. Unlike Win9x, Win2K only lets users that have specifically been assigned accounts to access it; if you attempt to access it from another system without speccifying a userid and passowrd, Win9x will attempt to connect using the current user's Windows Login ID and password - if either or both are invalid, you'll be asked to provide a password before it will let you access it. It's not going to allow unauthenticated access the way Win9x does.
