That's the MS-approved way to do it, unfortunately; MS in their infinite wisditude decided not to include the necessary shell component upgrades in IE5. You might want to check www.ntfaq.com for additional references regarding adding ActiveDesktop to NT without IE4; there was an article there that listed the components involved in the upgrade for NT 4.0 under SP3; unless there are replacement components involved in SP5 that can't be reliably replaced after an 'accidental' rollback of the SP, it should work without doing a complete deinstall/reinstall by applying the upgrade components and reapplying SP5.
