This is very strange. It seems very unlikely that the OS is somehow searching out the second copy (and third and fourth ?) and trashing it when it goes down or comes back up. So the file must be incomplete as it stands and then is never properly completed.

A way to test this hypothesis would be to copy the file to another place and then down the system properly. The original would be fine but the copy should be trashed.
