In my opinion (though I'm quite ignorant here and don't have much experience with API calls), API solution would be more general and elegant. If you can provide a code for Getting/Setting menu font, it would be great. You can add a new entry in API section here. Basically, I believe, though haven't tried yet, it should not be much different from the code, you already posted, to retrieve Title Font attributes.
