I think you will find the main problem is that you don't have your stylesheet output mode set to text. The default mode is xml so the stylesheet outputs the whitespace characters included in the stylesheet text, as Mike indicated in his earlier post. In the text mode you must specifically call for whitespace using the proper character codes.
