This was already disputed on UT (surprised?) few years ago. I remember the best answer to this was "then divide the total length of the file with this different length" :).

Actually, the solution (in that case) was to show a progress indicator based on the byte position within the file, and not on number of records, but then it meant that this was done using LLFF (low-level file functions), not Append.
