> Bill yourself out as a web developer. Try peddling a VFP-based solution vs a VB/SQL/ASP based solution. Tell me how many jobs you get for each.

Web Connection is a great product. But, it is a VFP-based solution. And that in it of itself, will close a lot of doors. You do know how superficial many IT managers are - don't you.

Again, it is not an argument soley about technology. Technology cannot be your only battle ground.

John;

How true.

I cannot speak for other areas of the country but in Silicon Valley Java/Unix is the most popular tool set in demand for software development. I am still working with Microsoft products for the most part. How good a tool is means nothing when the IT department has its own standards. I know of no IT department that will allow VFP to be used. Yes, WWC is a great product but just mention it is VFP based and you have shut the door. I am only speaking from experience. Your religion may be the only “true religion” but others may not want to hear it. Soapboxes are cheap but you may soon find yourself standing high and alone without an audience.

One of Rick’s comments about WWC is why spend months developing in ASP when you can do it in WWC in a few days? Rick is correct and I have even given demonstrations of development time vs results. Our corporate standard is ASP with Visual Interdev and that is the way it is. Have you ever tried to “change city hall”? I have better things to do with my time.

We have 80 developers where I work and I am able to teach them things they were not aware of. Being 58 in Silicon Valley is frightening, as most developers are 24. My advantage is knowledge, experience, the ability and desire to learn and teach others. I would not suggest to my son or daughter to go into Electronic Engineering or Programming as professions as I have done. To me each one has too many negatives.

My greatest passion is playing and teaching flamenco guitar. I play solo and accompaniment for singers and dancers. This is something I have done for over 40 years and love. If I could make a living at it I would get rid of all my computers. Well, I might have to keep one to maintain contact with my friends and family all over the world.

Tom
