I don't believe that the ONLY key to speed and robustness is VFP, but in the case of web apps, a WebConnect solution often is more scalable and therefore cost-effective, in addition to the ease of development and debugging compared to ASP/COM.
Providing a better solution does not qualify as "getting Fox in the back door", IMO. That argument is just blowing smoke.
