Hi Scott,
I run into people like this every now and again. It is usually pointless to take an argumentative approach. What I find effective is to ask these types of people, very politely, to validate their statements. Ask them where they received their information, and how you can get a hold of it, to review for yourself.
A lot of the time, people make baseless statements to make themselves look better or more knowledgable than their peers. Asking them to effectively "prove" their information can sometimes cause some embarrassment on their part, and put an end to unfounded remarks, whatever they may be.
