The things you need are already there, in the Record popup which shows up when you have VFP open, and have an open table selected. Now if you could find a way to have that popup show up when you need it (this is something I never succeeded, but then it's been four versions of Fox since the last try), and include it into your main menu, then you could assign your keyboard shortcuts to its bars.

That way the keyboard shortcut wouldn't paste anything into your command window, but would invoke VFP's default behavior for that menu bar. Check sys(1500) or whatever it is, which gives you the names of all items in the menu system (just make sure the Record pad is visible while you do it), and you could maybe create your menu pad with the same bars as this popup has. The beauty of it that it would work even if the menu (or just an independent popup) is not visible (activate... noshow) and your command window doesn't have to be visible or to exist at all.
