Paul,
While I don't know what the underlying cause is, this error is caused when the numbers do not show up next to the "buttons" in the lower part of the left frame. The buttons show up, but the counts themselves do not. Usually, a Refresh in that pane corrects the problem.

This may have to do with a change I think occurred a couple of weeks ago. At one time, I believe there were two panes in the left frame: one for the buttons from "New thread" to "Other forums" and one for the message counters. It appears that was changed so all the buttons in the left frame are now in one pane. It was then that I started see some of these problems.

FWIW, my theory is that the counters are calculated and sent in the HTTP stream last. As such, sometimes they may not be sent in time for the browsers internal timeout to close a stream. When the page timeouts, everything is displayed except for the counters.
