>My company has recently hired (last week) a tech. lead for this Internet Team. This past week this individual has told me that VFP and ColdFusion were dead and has "knocked" VFP plenty of times.

Scott;

My first thoughts are it is not worth while arguing with this individual. Your company chose him as a “tech.lead” so you are up against him and your company on this. When dealing with an individual of this type you have several choices. Remain quiet or argue. I would suggest you and your peers watch your backs regardless of what you do. I have worked with a number of egocentric idiots that called themselves programmers. For the most part they are incompetent and survive through political means at everyone else’s expense.

About a year ago I attended an advanced Visual Basic Training Session. The instructor was a well-known VFP-VB programmer. He told me he thought VB 6 had been “pushed to the limit” as far as the language was concerned. The instructors view point as well as my own on VFP and VB or any other tool: “Use the right tool for the job”.

VFP and ColdFusion are not dead but do not have the largest market share. Both are good tools. Some people will tell you Pearl is dead. Really? Sure – they read PC Magazines and have little time to explore the world of reality. It is better to let someone else form your thoughts so you can regurgitate another’s view point. You are thus an "expert" and able to converse with other "experts" who have the same knowledge base - they got it from a magazine!

You can work for the worst company in the world and if you have a good supervisor that will make all the difference. By the same token you can work for the best company in the world and have a supervisor that makes you feel like you are in hell. When the latter is the case it is time to look for a new position.

Welcome to the world of programming.

Tom
