I am confused. Often, When I visit a site, I receive an automatic response via email. How did they obtain my email address? Did I give it to them and forget or are they pulling the info from somewhere?

But they are not dependable, and even if they were, I wouldn't tell you how to do it because this is considered a huge invasion of privacy.
