i had started off having everything in an ADO recordset, but for what i understood of performance, passing a recordset between objects was much slower than a string, an aray or a collection. am i wrong??

No, that's definitely a concern. On the other hand, is it worse than moving the recordset to an array, passing the array, and scanning the array to manually populate the combo box? Depends on the situation. I recommend a little benchtesting against a semi-realistic data set, for your particular app.
