The only time I've seen problems with PACK has been in network & UNIX environments where it is sometimes possible to "beat" the operating system!
I watched a UNIX system pull about 6 MB of data from a deleted file once ! It was so weird, we had to repeat the process to make sure we hadn't dreamed it! Now we allow settle time between a pack and a copy command using the same file!
Typically I archive all data files nightly, create a new PACKed copy from the source, & rebuild the index as best I can. Being paranoid, I also keep an archive copy of the empty .dbf and .cdx. Doing this has saved me from restoring from tape for the past couple of years, a task I don't miss! When we used PACK without the archive system, we could count on a restore from tape at least once a month!
