>John - You're making a few broad statements there. I'm curious which part of the 2nd Amendment you think needs to be brought into the 21st Century. Do you feel that the whole amendment is no longer relevant, as militias (as a means of national defense) are basically obsolete? Perhaps you think that government is perfectly capable of fulfilling its role as protector of the people, and therefore we no longer need to allow private ownership of firearms?

>As someone who takes his right to keep and bear arms very seriously, and has seen a personal weapon used in the defense of his home, I'd like very much for you to explain why I need to give them up. Somehow, being called a "clueless asshole" just doesn't cut it.

My father-in-law used to collect guns. While test firing one of his new guns against a target nailed to a tree, his three-old-son came out of the house to see what Daddy was doing. a bullet ricocheted off the tree and hit the boy in the back. The sad part was the bullet didn't kill him instantly. Instead, it crippled him for ten years before he died of spinal degeneration.

The incident ripped the family apart in ways you can't imagine. Exercising his right to not bear arms, my father-in-law destroyed his weapons and never picked up a gun again. I respect guns for what they can do, and for that reason I will never own one. Guns should be reserved solely for the police and the military--not for the general public.
