Not that a "programmatic change" was being suggested - but it would be unwise to assume (in an environment with a large number of Users) that all graphic cards supported the same number of colours / resolution / etc. Change the screen resolution programmatically and you may leave the User looking either at a blank screen, a surreal interference pattern, etc.
