What I have seen is that VB work is in a wide range of rates: $25-$100 or so while VFP work tends to be marginally higher: in the $50-$125 range

As I've pointed out before, though, note the ranges.... it's really hard to draw conclusions based on this.

Put another way... a friend of mine who is an animator recently boasted that he was making more, in LA, in the entertainment industry, than two friends who were Oracle developers. Then he looked for jobs here in NYC and couldn't find much for more than one-half his current salary.

Hmmmm... does that mean that cartoonists make more than Oracle developers?

No, it means that if you live in Hollywood and are an animator you can do pretty well for yourself. If you live in a financial center and are a database nerd you can do pretty well for yourself....

Sorry to keep flogging a dead horse with this, but I know that some less-experienced programmers might be gazing in and taking these threads into account when considering career choices. Be careful: there is a whole lot that goes into account -- the bottom line is that programming is a pretty lucrative career with a lot of demand, whether you are VB, VFP, C++, Java, Oracle, SQL Server, whatever. The variation depends on such factors as languages, business fields, geographic location, and of course level of expertise.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts. - Bertrand Russell
