Hmmm... I looked, and since it was stated that they already had "old" routines that could be brought up to date, I didn't feel I had anything concrete to contribute. There just doesn't seem to be anything 'generic' enough to suit everyone, beyond your SELECT..UNION..SELECT it just takes a lot of detailed massaging (munging?) of the data.
