Listbox is much easier becuase you can replace it by TreeView ActiveX control, which allows to change properties of each note (item in list), such as back color or fore color etc etc.

For combobox, you can try to use images. Soemwehere in the help you can find a sample of how to add images to the listbox or combobox. Than, one image - one color.
