That's my impression too. It's refreshing to hear someone speak their own mind with conviction like that, especially when its of the no-nonsense lets call it what it is variety. I guess he can appear a little full of himself, which probably puts some people off, but that's probably part of the territory. He was brewing up some kind of conflict with Ontario a while ago (something to do with hunting/fishing lodges) and he had me rooting for him.
