>>anyone who wants to own a gun is obviously not of sound mind, so should be banned from owning one<<

Sounds like the definition of the best politician; a competition is help to find who wants the job the least, whereupon they are dragged kicking and screaming into office!
I've never owned a rifle or pistol, or a gun for that matter, but I have certainly used one and can think of circumstances in which I would want to have one. If that makes me "not of sound mind" then so be it, especially if it also means that I am "not dead" or maimed.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
