I attended electronic engineering college from 1969-1973. We used the terms "English and Metric Measurement Systems". Both systems were in use with the metric being used more often in physics. In 1865 The Congress of the United States approved a bill allowing the country to convert from the "English Measurement" to the "Metric - or French Measurement system". Seems like 135 years is enough of a wait but we do not want to hurry.

One arguement, which is valid, is that English Threads are much stronger than Metric Threads (nuts, bolts, screws, etc.). You will hear mechanical engineers argue this all the time - SASE Specifications will prove that point in short order. They have the specifications and results to back up their findings and feelings.

I think the reason we have not converted to Metric is it will cost money. I know of no American Company that wants to spend a penny for anything that they feel is "alright". The old saying: "If it's not broke don't fix it"!


We were told in 1973 that two countries remained on the English Measurement System - the United States and Yemen. Now there is a contrast! Somehow I feel we will be the last to convert to the metric measurement system - if in fact we ever do.
