Rahul, a handy trick is to call CHRTRAN twice:

lcOrig = "abcd ## 55 JJJ )))345 )) +++++"
lcOrig = upper(lcOrig)
lcClean = chrtran(lcOrig, chrtran(lcOrig, "01234567890ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ",""), "")

That way you are certain to get only what you want.
