Don't forget, we have to do "another language" anyways, and I'm referring to the elective which is required for MCSD.
It appears that one of the difference between MCP (a cert in one thing) and MCSD (certified SOLUTION developer) is that you know more than just one language or platform, you're more well-rounded.
I haven't gotten to MCSD yet because I need to do more learning on the elective. The process will be good for me. If my VFP certs run out and I need to learn more VFP or another language/platform like .NET to stay current, that process will be good for me as well.
The problem is not with the currently certified people needing to be re-certified, the problem is with the folks who are still in FPW2.6 or VB4 or whatever, and are terribly behind in the market. One thing being certified does is it tells someone that you are keeping your skills current with the software industry.
