That is an interesting story. In short, after the Spanish Civil War, and after the Luftwaffe practiced for their invasion of Europe by bombing the town of Guernica (in Northern Spain) in 1936, Franco met with Hitler at the French border and basically showed him that Spain was in ruins and the people were starving so it was not interesting to Hitler to invade.
