How true! It took Spain many years to recover. It is fortunate that Germany did not invade. When Franco left office Spain entered the 20th Century.
If you are familiar with Switzerland during WWII. The Swiss were neutral (except for the banks), and had a standing army of 500,000 men. A top Swiss General met with a German Field Marshall. The strength of the Swiss Army was no secret. Every tunnel and bridge in Switzerland was mined and could be blown up upon command. This may have helped the Swiss and prevented an invasion from Germany. The Field Marshall asked: “What if I send in one million men”? The Swiss officer answered: “Each man would have to shoot twice”!
