There are some utilities around that will "FIXDBF" that seem to repair a 2.6 table. Possibly in the files section here on the UT.
I haven't used 2.6 in so long that I have forgotten the exact procedure, but I know I used to be able to repair corrupted tables that returned that error message.
remember what 2.6 called a database, VFP 5 and 6 call a "table"
