Re deterrence: even if I thought there was a deterrent effect it would not justify taking a person's life in my mind.


Re drug war: if we talked together we could probably find quite a bit of common ground. I would suggest these ideas:

1) Greatly increase the funds for drug treatment.

2) Decriminalize marijuana. Based on about 35 years of observation, I believe that pot is less dangerous to individuals than either tobacco or alcohol.

3) Keep trying to keep tobacco and alcohol out of the hands of minors (under the age of 18). It's silly to say that 18 year olds are old enough to die in a war but not old enough to drink.

4) Increase penalties for DUI.

5) I would support a constitutional amendment authorizing the creation of a class of products and services which are legal (for adults) but cannot be advertised. Alcohol, tobacco, marijauna, gambling and prostitution for instance.
