It looks awful < vbg >. Seriously, it is always(?) possible to choose a Display Properties dialog box color scheme that you will satisfy your need for one specific application; it's just that we wanted to provide a more granular control to the user (he/she has the choice to make the application look different than other Windows applications). This was considered a big advantage over our sole competitor whose application did not provide any customization to the user.
Our color picker facility has some other features not mentionned in the previous posts. For instance, the user has control over the color display of negative numbers, past due dates, and critical data. The users felt, and so do I, that you should be able to recognize critical pieces of information at a glance without even having to read the data.
