Maybe the CPCONVERT() function. There is an example in the Hacker's Guide where:
WAIT WINDOW "Jos"+CHR(130)
does not display properly, yet:
WAIT WINDOW CPCONVERT(437,1252,"Jos"+CHR(130))
does. Perhaps you need something like:
CPCONVERT(1252, 1253, lcString)
