It's in VFP3 as well. I have found it unsatisfactory for my landscape report which was not created with ASCII in mind. You can try it, but you may have the same problems. I would guess that any report which is going to be printed as text only must be arranged in such a way that whatever process converts it to text will not get confused about exact placement of report controls. That means pushing them around until they land in the right place.
