I have encountered slowdowns caused by continual virus scans being run on the network servers (new and edited files). I alleviated the problem noticeably by ensuring that all files of a temporary nature were created locally. Additionally, I make temporary local copies of lookup files that are used often/seldom changed. If it is a virus scan problem, the network administrators could possibly relax the scan rules for the folder storing the data (scan new rather than modified?).
