Put a messagebox just before the read event. Re-Compile (I think there is a recompile switch to assure all source objects are 'compiled'. ABd then build exe. If the message box pops, then it made it that far. Then put a messagebox in the opening forms load/init, see if its making it that far. Somewhere there is a canel, quit or release (or something). Are you running inside the VFP _SCREEN or are you using standalone forms?
