When I sent that message, I was in Oregon, so work was not up the street. It was my brother's Win 2000 laptop. We found out later that the password had not been forgotten by Win 2000. We had to select "Safe Mode with Network Support" instead of just "Safe Mode" before Win 2000 recognize the password. Once we got booted up, we uninstalled the offending app and things were fine again.
