During the mid 1960 – 1970 period there were many television newscasts about welfare in the United States. I remember the Governor of Mississippi stating that in his state the maximum welfare payment was $50 and no food stamps. In California the welfare payment for a family of 4 was $450 and food stamps were given also. There was a term ‘Freedom Bus’which brought black Americans from the South to California. People were given a one way bus ticket to California. Many settled in Los Angeles and this did not raise hope but did raise frustration. The 1965 Watts riots and many other social problems were products of the frustrations these people experienced.

I do not know how welfare is distributed today – if it is different according to cost of living areas or what. To buy a home out here you better have 20% down for that $550,000 fixer upper. If you want a nice house expect to pay $1.2 million or more.
