Yes, I know it can be. Blame Office Automation. I have tried to optimize the code as best I could. if you use the Coverage Profiler hook you can then get an idea of what is slowing things down, exactly, and maybe tweak the reports.

I can't say right now. Depends a LOT on a new type of interface to Word I'm experimenting with.
