Sure, West Wind works fine with SQL Server backend, with your coding done in VFP. In fact, the most recent versions of Web Connection have the capability built-in to store some of the necessary "system" tables in SQL Server. Take a close look also at the wwSQL class, which can handle queries.
All around, it's a very good product, with new features added on a regular basis and very good tech support from the author as well as many of the developers using it.
