Can you test if the delay is being called by Acrobat itself? In my experience, Acrobat reader is a very delicate (read:crappy) piece of software that is susceptible to hanging open, even behind the scenes. To see if it's Acrobat or somehow your code, double-click two different pdf documents in explorer and see if the delay occurs there.
