I agree that a name change is a priority.

Trouble is finding one we all agree with.
Hows about

MS Solution

>>I think it is agreed that perception is important and is an ongoing problem with VFP. The question is what effect would removing VFP from VS.NET have on this perception? It could go either way, but I believe this is largely dependent on marketing. Leaving it in would seem to give the perception that VFP continues to be part of Microsoft's strategy. On the other hand, it could also invite reviewers to bash VFP for having little in common with the other tools and not utilizing the .NET framework, CLR, etc. As a separate product, VFP could potentially be marketed for all of it's strenghts, from desktop to enterprise. At this point, it is unknown if that would actually happen.

>You've hit my real concern - marketing. All the pros of removing it are based on MS marketing VFP which has never happened. Even if the VFP team gets control of marketing they still need a budget.

>The first step in any marketing plan is knowing your target audience. It might be argued the VFP has no real audience except the VFP community. Basically, legacy folks. I know there is the famous position paper but that thing sounds more like a political speech than a true statement on who should buy VFP.

>Doesn't matter who runs marketing without the budget. This will demonstrate a commitment on the part of MS especially if know how much compared to other MS items like VS and office. I do *not* expect VFP to get the same amount.

>Unfortunately the Fox name has been trashed. It's someone accused of murder and it turns out that someone else did it. They still think of the first guy as guilty. (No OJ jokes, please!!) A new name will generate some buzz all of its own. Combined with the first two things we would have a decent chance of getting something going.
>
>Without the above, removing it from VS will simply destroy whatever momentum we have now. Before anyone says "fat chance" I know none of these is likely to happen but I feel I need to say them.

>>BTW, I'm still undecided. Where's Whil when you need him? <g>.

>He is probably tracking down two UT'ers looking for the other half of CertFox. I wanted to ask Cindy if she had her beginning half done or the ending half but thought I'd let her work. < vbg >
