I agree - it totally ticks me off too. I've only dabbled on the UT over the last few years, I've tended to check in when I needed something and not hang around too much otherwise. But, I can't count the times Ed Rauh, George Tasker, Jim Booth, or somebody else has, if not saved my butt, at least saved me from an enormous amount of aggravation. I was going to post a question today, but the first thing that came to my mind was how do I let Ed (or whoever) know that I appreciate all the help, even if it's not complete or a little flakey. I mean in general, I can figure things out, I always try to do my homework and help myself first, and I expect people here where I work to to the same. My only requests have been of the "point me in the right direction" type, and people here have been unfailingly generous in providing that whenever I've asked.
