The entry must no contain any spaces at all, and the value must be between 20 and 254; larger values produce inconsistent results, and smaller values default to 20. The format should be:

FILES=xxx

where xxx is the decimal value. Note that no spaces are embedded; "FILES=240" is not the same as "FILES = 240".
