Hi!

Thanx a lot for giving me some ways/solutions to maximize the performance of Windows 98.

Previously, I tried that solutions, I removed all the application that is not necessary in my application. For the first time I used it, it works fast then after performing some commands on my application, like SET FILTERING, browsing, updating, and previewing a report, the performance of Win98 is degrading, unlike the WinNT, degrading also but not much.

The SET FILTER command is actually affects the performance of my application. We usually filter by location, from Region downto Barangay, then by implementing agency, funding agency, etc... It has a lot of fields to filter when we are updating our data, we implement these for fast updating and retrieval of data... Evrytime I change the filter expression, the performace is also degrading....

Performance in Win98 is diffficult to troubleshoot. Indeed, if you take the same machine but perform a clean install of Win98 and make your test again, you most probably obtain a better performance.

In my experience, Win9x (and ME) deteriorates (in any sense, not just performance) with time due to bad application unninstalling, trashed registry, and its poor memory management makes that any service running slow down things more that it really needs.

NT is far better in many of this aspects, and Win2000, as far as I used it, even better sometimes.

You best approach to fix the Win98 would be, IMO, to try to clean up any unnecesary services, and then tweak a little with the virtual memory and disk access settings.
