Ask them what they do when they have a bug they can't find or a problem they can't solve by themselves. You'll see whether they know how to dig up an answer or whether they just let others do it for them.

Ask them what they do to improve their knowledge and skills. Look for stuff they do on their own time, or folks that have bought their own books/magazines so they don't have to depend on whatever the employer is giving out. Or, maybe they'll say that they read newsgroups every night because they're free and they couldn't afford books right now.
