Okay, so instead of messing with resources in an applications resource table use the LoadImage() API function to get at your resource handle. The MSDN code is a simple "no frills" example, try looking under the Resource Functions section.

Be warned, dealing with icons is simple, however if you want to start creating dialogs etc it starts getting really complex.
