Have you set the timer interval to 1000?

If you set the timer interval to a value smaller then 10 then you've got the change that the program doesn't react at all.
Are you sure that you can type the value in the textbox when you remove the timer?
it looks more that the textbox is read-only or has a max size of 0 or is not enabled or something like that.
