Progress on the timing issue. Not quite conclusive but:

1. the drastic difference between executing the SQL command in VFP 5 and VFP 6 does not occur on all machines. Remember both versions are running on the same pc.

2. on the machines where it takes longer, the additional time is reduced or eliminated by starting VFP 6.0 with the "-A" switch. Which causes it to load without Configuration and/or Registery data. We are not using a Config file.

We are now trying to nail down how, what, when and where it got into the registery that is causing this. That is "what's the diff between how VFP 5 and VFP 6 is starting - on the same pc". When I chase it down I'll get back. Any ideas?
