Hi Andy,

After reading this thread, and being in the same position myself of having interviewed and hired people, I have some input.

I like to try and find out basically what kind of person someone is when interviewing. When given a project to do, are they able to find their own answers and make it happen?

I like to ask something like 'If I ask you to do something you have no idea how to do, how would you go about handling it?'

Since this is a VFP database development job, you may ask some specific things like : 'What can you tell me about the order of events which occur during instantiation of a form?' If they get pretty close, they have been working in VFP at least a while.

For general database knowledge/understanding I might ask them what, in their opinion distinguishes a good database from a bad one? The same question goes for a user interface, or an application...

Also, since my job involves a lot of maintenence, I like to ask how they feel about fixing/changing or updating someone else's code. If they have a philosophy about development in general, what is it?

Things like this help me when I am hiring people.

BTW, is this a good job opening you have over there? I might want to apply <g>
