Try loading the Windows Proxy Client. I'm willing to bet Microsoft has one of the most restrictive firewalls in existence, and I can get chat to work from the office. Can't get it to work w/o the Proxy Client, though (as is the case with a lot of web stuff).

Where do you get the client? I haven't got a clue, unfortunately; I get it from the internal servers at work. Looks like it comes with Proxy Server.
