If your file is on a Novell Network, have your network administrator check to see if there is a connection hold on the file. If there is your will not be able to use the file exclusively. Which you need to edit the record.

Have he or she close the connection and this will enable editing of the file. This can occur if a shutdown occurs that does not enable Novell to know whether you really wanted to let the file go.
